Dubai is an exotic city with a unique heritage. Human settlement dates to approximately 3000 BCE, when bands of nomadic cattle herders lived in the area. The site was ruled by the Sassanid Empire from the 3rd century CE until the introduction of Islam by the Umayyad Caliphate in the 7th century, and the region eventually became important for its pearling and fishing industries. Written records indicate that the town of Dubai was established in 1799 and was at first ruled by neighboring Abu Dhabi, before becoming an independent sheikhdom under the Maktoum Dynasty in 1833. Treaties in 1853 and 1892 made Dubai a British protectorate, and the city's growth was facilitated by its importance as a center of trade and pearl exports. The Great Depression of the 1930s was a major factor in the collapse of the pearling industry, but Dubai's emphasis on trade ensured its survival. Trading revenue allowed the development of infrastructure in the 1950s, and the discovery of oil in 1966 contributed to a quadrupling of the city's population by 1975. Though oil revenue has dropped considerably in the years since, Dubai is thriving today as a result of foreign investment, tourism, and free trade.
Modern Dubai is a world-class city for business, education, and culture. It is one of the world's fastest growing economies, with real estate and construction, trade (primarily with China, India, and the United States), and financial services comprising the largest sectors. The city is home to the Dubai Financial Market and NASDAQ Dubai, and is also a major center of the gold trade. Dubai Internet City, a free economic zone, has attracted many of the world's top technology companies, and Dubai Media City is a regional headquarters for several international news organizations. Dubai's institutions of higher education include American University in Dubai (which has appeared in the world rankings), Al Ghurair University, and British University in Dubai, in addition to the local satellite campuses of Cass Business School, Hult International Business School, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and many other universities based in the United States and Europe. Cultural events such as the Dubai International Film Festival, the Dubai Food Festival, and the Dubai Shopping Festival draw visitors from around the world, and the city also boasts the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, which is over half a mile in height. Meet a Dubai Tutor: Hassan A.
Hassan A. is a prep tutor and tutor trainer for Manhattan Review in Dubai. He specializes in tutoring for the GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL, and has been teaching in various capacities since 2003. A native of Tehran, Iran, Hassan is a graduate of Georgetown University, with BS and MS degrees from the Walsh School of Foreign Service. He began his career in China, teaching English to business executives, before moving to Dubai in order to conduct academic research into the history of the area's trade with his native country and teach in a local public school. Hassan has taught a number of successful applicants to local universities and to elite programs in the United States and Europe, and is also responsible for training new tutors in Manhattan Review's methods and programs.
Hassan's tutoring draws on the variety of teaching and learning experiences he has had over the years. "In between my job at a Dubai public school and my prep tutoring, every day presents a different challenge," he says. "I've found strategies in my one-on-one TOEFL prep that have worked quite well in my large classes, and vice versa. Diversity keeps my teaching fresh." Hassan is currently hoping to find a publisher for his academic research, and plans to pursue a PhD at some point in the future. He spends his free time playing cricket, reading American literature, and rooting for the Georgetown Hoyas basketball team.
